British actor John Hurt, known for his role in iconic films like “Elephant Man”, “Midnight Express” and “Alien” has died on Friday, January 27. He was 77 years old.
Hurt’s publicist, Charles McDonald, confirmed the veteran actor’s death to CNN, but declined to give any other details.
The actor revealed in the summer of 2015 that he has been suffering from pancreatic cancer but announced in October of the same year he was in remission and went on to sign to appear on the West End production of The Entertainer.
However, he pulled out later due to his physician’s advice.
Hurt was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire and went to St Michael’s Preparatory School before enrolling at Grimsby Art School (now the East Coast School of Art & Design) at age 17 to take up Arts.
His first film was the 1972 ‘The Wild and the Willing’ but his first major role was in ‘A man for all seasons’ four years later playing the character Richard Rich.
Among his many notable films are the ‘Midnight Express’ where he won a Golden Globe Award and Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, the cult classic ‘Alien’ (1979), the critically-acclaimed ‘Elephant Man’ (1980), ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ (2000), ‘Shooting Dogs’ (2005) and ‘V for Vendetta’ (2005) and ‘Hercules’ (2014).
Talking about his cancer and death on Radio Times, Mail Online has quoted him as saying: “I can’t say I worry about mortality, but it’s impossible to get to my age and not have a little contemplation of it.”
“We’re all just passing time, and occupy our chair very briefly,” he added.
On Saturday, tributes from fellow celebrities poured in for the iconic and respected actor.
Kiefer Sutherland said on Twitter: “My deepest sympathies to John Hurt’s family, friends and fans. He was a dear friend.”
“Very sad to hear of John Hurt’s passing. It was such an honor to have watched you work, sir,” Elijah Wood also tweeted.
