COMMENTARY: Pacquiao Challenges McGregor, But Is It The Right Choice?

The discussion of whether a potential super fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather JR wages on. It does appear to be a giant publicity stunt more than a legitimate discussion. Well, while they shout at each other and talk about their personal wealth, Manny Pacquiao has weighed in to say he will pull the gloves on if McGregor wants a real fight.

The Filipino star who is a longtime nemesis of Mayweather is willing to take on the challenge with McGregor just if it is in a boxing ring and not an Octagon! “In boxing? In boxing (I would) but not in (UFC), just boxing.”

In the same interview Pacquiao admitted he hadn’t seen any footage of McGregor sparring, but “if we are talking about Conor McGregor and boxing, it’s different. Boxing is different than MMA.”

Conor McGregor has plenty of training in boxing in the early days before MMA was even a big thing and hoped to become a professional. He is still known for his punching in the octagon now. His only loss against Nate Diaz came from grappling and a hold. An opportunity to get into a boxing ring would mean that there would be no chance of this happening.

Due to the multitude of skills needed for MMA, most fighters won’t be as powerful or quick as Pacquiao or Mayweather so no matter what task McGregor puts himself up against it is going to be a struggle. With Mayweather there is likely to be much more money on offer and a possibility of fighting in Las Vegas. We all know what happens in Vegas stays in vegas and it could be a fight to surpass even the Pacquiao Mayweather brawl. This is because it will be uniting fans from two separate sports not just boxing. The potential is massive.

Pacquiao could be in danger of falling into obscurity. His next fight could be against a fighter even he admits he has never heard of and that coupled with his work as a senator could make him irrelevant as a boxer. A potential match up with McGregor would certainly be an exciting proposition for Manny and I am sure if he gets it he will make it last. He believes he has one big fight left in him, I am just worried he would leave his career on a fight with an MMA fighter.
