  • They (BPCI) said, ‘No, you don’t need an interpreter because the Philippines is actually known as an English-speaking country.'” – Venus Raj

More than six years after she competed in the prestigious Miss Universe beauty pageant, Venus Raj revealed that she really wanted to have an interpreter and even requested for one.

As per an article by ABS-CBN News, the 28-year-old beauty queen recalled that when she filed out a Miss Universe form, she indicated that she wanted an interpreter because she knew that the Miss Universe organization will provide one.

However, her request wasn’t granted because before she did not get the approval of Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI).

She said: “They (BPCI) said, ‘No, you don’t need an interpreter because the Philippines is actually known as an English-speaking country, so hindi mo kailangan.'”

If it was up to her, Raj, who finished fourth runner-up in the pageant, said she really wanted one and she believes that could’ve given a better answer during the Miss Universe 2010 pageant if she was given an interpreter.

“My answer could have been different. I could’ve framed it in a way na, wow. But it did not happen and everything really happens for a reason,” she said

Raj failed to impress a lot of people during the question and answer portion.

She was asked by judge William Baldwin, “What is one big mistake that you’ve made in your life and what did you do to make it right?”

GMA News Online quoted the then-22-year-old Raj as saying: “You know what, Sir in my 22 years of existence I can say that there is nothing major major, I mean, problem that I have done in my life. Because I am very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving to me. So, thank you so much that I am here, thank you thank you so much.”

After that, ‘major, major‘ became a popular expression in the Philippines.

When Raj was asked if she thinks our country’s Miss Universe bet Maxine Medina needs an interpreter, she said that it’s the latter’s prerogative but she has to submit to the authority which is Binibining Pilipinas.

“If Binibining Pilipinas don’t allow her to have an interpreter, sila pa rin may desisyon,” she added.
