MANILA, Philippines – Former Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach shared details of her onstage hug and conversation with Miss Philippines candidate Maxine Medina which was captured in a viral photo by pageant trainer Jonas Gaffud.
According to Wurtzbach, she intentionally sought out Medina onstage to both congratulate and reassure her that she performed well.
“Hinahanap ko siya because alam ko ‘yung tumatakbo sa isip niya [I was searching for her because I knew what was running in her mind,” she told ABS-CBN. “I’ve been through that before”.
Wurtzbach said she praised Medina and told her not to worry about her performance especially in the Q-and-A portion.
“She was actually okay, she wasn’t crying, I hugged her, and congratulated her, at sabi ko sa kanya ‘Mars, ang maganda dito, walang kakalat na video sa YouTube na nagkamali ka sa Q and A’, kasi yun yung pinaka-inaalala niya [Mars, everything’s wonderful, there will be no video of you doing wrong in the Q and A, because that was what she was thinking about the most],” she said.
“Sabi ko, ‘Walang mambabash sa ‘yo kasi hindi ka nagkamali [I said, ‘No one will bash you because you did nothing wrong’],” she added.
Medina earlier thanked her fans for the support while asking her bashers to move on.
“Well, let’s move on. It’s already done. Let’s have fun. At least Top 6 and Miss Universe happened here in the Philippines. It’s history,” she said.
“I’m good. I’m happy na at least nakapasok tayo sa [at least we reached the] Top 6. I hope I did my best. Thank you so much sa lahat ng mga Pilipinong sumuporta sa akin. Hindi kayo bumitaw [Thank you to all Filipinos who’ve supported me. You never wavered],” she added.
