Airport barkers will be banned at NAIA starting next week following complaints from passengers

  • MIAA announced it will ban airport barkers at NAIA starting next week
  • The announcement came following several complaints from passengers
  • Passengers complained of harassment from the abusive barkers

The Manila International Airport Authority announced that airport barkers will no longer be allowed at all terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) because of the rising number of complaints against them by passengers.

According to GMA News Online, passengers complained of harassment from these stubborn barkers aside from having to deal with exorbitant taxi rates being charged by abusive drivers.

MIAA officials and leaders of the transport group at NAIA met in order to put a stop to the barkers’ racket.

MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal and other airport officials claimed they were also victimized by these barkers who would insist on getting taxis that overcharge passengers.

Last year, a barker and an abusive taxi driver conspired to victimize a pregnant woman and her husband’s cousin. The driver charged the passengers P300 per kilometer. When the taxi had traveled 6.6 km, the driver asked the passengers if they would be able to pay since, based on his calculation, their fare was already at P1,980 at P300 per kilometer.

The passengers’ money was short by P580 and the driver forcibly took the pregnant woman’s iPhone5 worth P22,000 before they were allowed to get off the cab.
