  • The woman was found guilty of acid attack that resulted in her victim’s loss of sight
  • Qesas  is permitted under the “eye for an eye” principle of Sharia Law

A woman who was found guilty of throwing acid two years ago that resulted in her victim’s loss of sight will be punished in accordance with the Sharia Law’s “eye for an eye” principle. She will be blinded in one eye as retribution for her crime.

As per the Arab News, under Sharia Law, qesas (retribution) is permitted in cases where bodily harm was inflicted.

“The sentence to blindness in one eye, payment of blood money (compensation), and seven years imprisonment have been confirmed by the highest court,” judiciary official Majid Karami in the city of Mahdasht was quoted as saying by a local news agency.

The official did not say the date when the sentence will be carried out, but under the law the victim’s family can prevent the imposition of the punishment in exchange for blood money or financial compensation from the perpetrator of the crime.

Amnesty International is appealing to Iran not to carry out the harsh punishment.
