- JPE scoffed at De Lima’s claim she is a political prisoner
- He said he, Estrada and Revilla didn’t claim such status when they were imprisoned under Aquino
- He also told her to just face the case head-on
MANILA, Philippines – Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile scoffed at Sen. Leila de Lima’s claim of being a political prisoner; saying he and fellow lawmakers Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla Jr. did not claim such status themselves when they were imprisoned under the Aquino administration.
“There’s no such thing as a political prisoner. You are a prisoner, period. Kami na binilanggo nila na wala naman kaming kamuwang-muwang, ano kami? Sila santo, santa, at kami demonyo? Ano ba yan?” he told ABS-CBN.
[What about us who were detained without any knowledge? What does that make us? They are saints and we are demons? What is that?]
De Lima, the justice secretary at the time, built up a case for plunder against the three senators. While Enrile has been out on bail, Estrada and Revilla are still detained at the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame where the lady senator will also be confined.
Enrile also dared his colleague to face the charges if she really is innocent.
“Bawat isa sa atin, kung may paratang, sagutin. Wala nang reklamo. Bayaan mo na lang sa husgado litisin ang problema,” he said. “Kung wala kang kasalanan, bakit ka matatakot? Huwag kang mag-iingay.”
[Each one of us should answer to allegations. No more complaints. Just let the courts resolve the problem. If you did not do anything wrong, why will you be scared? Don’t make noise.]
De Lima is accused of violating three sections of the country’s anti-drug trafficking law along with former driver Ronnie Dayan and former Bureau of Corrections OIC Rafael Ragos.
