• German magazine cover showed an illustration of Trump holding the severed head of the Statue of Liberty and a bloodied knife
• The image was illustrated by a Cuban-born American artist
• The artist said he did not fear any backlash from supporters of Trump or his administration
Not a few people believed that the weekly German magazine Der Spiegel has gone too far after its latest edition featured an illustration of US President Donald Trump holding the severed head of the Statue of Liberty in one hand and a bloodied knife in the other.
The cover carried the caption: “America First.”
According to BuzzFeed, the magazine’s illustrator, Cuban-born American artist Edel Rodriguez, said he wanted the message to be direct: “Trump is beheading the American democracy.” He added: “there is no grey area.”
The magazine cover sparked criticisms, but Rodriguez said he is not afraid that the imagery would cause any backlash from Trump supporters or the administration.
“I was born in Cuba in a dictatorship. I’m an American and I have the right to do whatever the heck I want to do in this country. I do not feel like I should be afraid of anything in this country,” Rodriguez said.
