- Harry Roque scoffed at Senator Leila De Lima with another ‘sexist’ remark
- The solon asked De Lima why she prefers AFP over PNP as detention facility
- However, Roque later apologized to the senator for his ‘inexcusable ill attempt at humor’
MANILA, Philippines – In yet another controversial remark, this time directed at Senator Leila De Lima, Kabayan Rep. Harry Roque asked the embattled lawmaker why she prefers to be detained at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Detention Center instead of the Philippine National Police in Camp Crame.
“Tama na ‘yung practice na ‘yung akusado namimili ng detention facility. Bakit niya gusto ma-detain sa Armed Forces of the Philippines? Dahil ba madaming lalaki do’n?” asked Roque during a press conference on Wednesday.
[Enough of the practice where the accused can choose a detention facility. Why would she (De Lima) want to be detained at the AFP? Is it because there are so many men there?]
Roque was apparently insinuating about De Lima’s romantic relationships with several men including former driver Ronnie Dayan, an MMDA enforcer named Warren Cristobal and ex-security aide Joenel Sanches.
“Siya na nagsabi Armed Forces of the Philippines e samantalang ‘yung separate detention for women puro babae kasi,” Roque said.
[It came from her that she prefers to be detained at AFP, while there is a separate detention facility for women, all are female inmates.]
However, after two hours, Roque issued an apology to De Lima; apparently after realizing his blunder about another sexist remark, saying his statement was ‘out of line’ and an ‘inexcusable ill attempt at humor’.
“I do maintain, however, that the powerful should not be allowed to choose where they will be detained. That violates the equal protection clause of the Constitution,” the solon added.
Amid the looming arrest, De Lima earlier said she prefers AFP over the PNP in Camp Crame because the latter ‘had many drug convicts’ and she cannot deal with them.
