“I don’t deserve this,” says Senator De Lima on looming arrest

• Senator Leila De Lima said she does not deserve her impending arrest
• The DOJ filed charges against her before a Muntinlupa Court
• De Lima denied abusing her power during her stint as Secretary of Justice

Senator Leila De Lima said she does not deserve the possible arrest over drug-related charges filed against her by the Department of Justice before the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court.

She also called as unfair Presidential Chief Legal Counsel Atty. Sal Panelo’s earlier statement that she could suffer the same fate she supposedly caused former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo should the charges against her be proven true.

As per a GMA article, in 2011, De Lima, who was then the justice secretary, barred the former president from leaving the country to seek medical treatment abroad despite a temporary restraining order against travel restrictions issued by the Supreme Court.

“Hindi ko po, hinding-hindi ko po inabuso ang aking kapangyarihan. That’s why I do not deserve this kasi wala naman ho talagang basehan ‘yung mga binabato nila sa akin na mga kaso ngayon,” De Lima said.

[I did not abuse my authority. That’s why I don’t deserve this. The charges they are throwing against me are baseless.]

“Wala po akong kino-commit na acts of persecution. Hindi ko po iyon style. Hindi ko po ginagawa iyon, hindi po ako nag-abuso ng aking kapangyarihan bilang Secretary of Justice,” she added.

[I have committed no acts of persecution. That’s not my style. I didn’t do it., I did not abuse my influence as Secretary of Justice]
