Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald De la Rosa revealed the supposed assassination plot against him by the Islamic State-linked Maute Goup during his visit to Mindanao last month.
PNP chief De la Rosa, who was the guest of honor and speaker at the Mindanao State University (MSU) last January 25, said it was a member of the Maute Group, identified as Eyemen Alonto, arrested by the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) police who disclosed the assassination attempt, as per a CNN Philippines story.
“May nagreport sa akin kahapon na PNP at Army na doon sa ARMM (Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) when I was the guest of honor and speaker sa commencement exercises ng MSU. Na-uncover nila dahil may nahuli sila na member ng Maute group,” he said during his speech at the 23rd anniversary of the National Police College in Silang, Cavite on Tuesday, February 28.
[The PNP and the Army in the ARMM reported to me that the plot was uncovered when they captured a member of the Mute group]
“May narecover na IED (improvised explosive device) na intended for me during my visit at Mindanao State University. Kung hindi makuha sa IED, may Maute members na a-assasinate sa akin sa loob ng gym,” he added.
[An IED intended for me was recovered. If the IED fail to kill me, there will be Maute members who will assassinate me inside the gym]
The PNP chief said the terrorists were not able to carry out the assassination inside the school because of the presence of the MSU community and his tight close-in security.
