Palace: Simpler EDSA anniversary rites does not diminish its significance

• Palace official defended more sober EDSA anniversary celebration
• He said simpler rites does not diminish the significance of the event
• He also said theme to focus more on reflection, EDSA’s lessons

MANILA, Philippines – Senior Deputy Executive Menardo Guevarra defended the Palace’s decision for a more sober observance of the 31st EDSA anniversary; saying the simpler rites will in no way diminish the event’s significance.

“Some people have been asking why the proposed program for the celebration of the 31st anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution for this year is rather sober, simple, no fanfare… It does not indicate that the present administration or the EPPC (EDSA People Power Commission) is giving any less significance to the celebration of the 31st anniversary,” Rappler quoted him as saying.

This year’s EDSA celebration will be held at Camp Aguinaldo, not at the People Power Monument. Former president Fidel V. Ramos has confirmed his attendance. His successor, former president Benigno Aquino III has also been invited but has yet to respond

According to Guevarra, the lack of pomp and pageantry is due to their decision to focus on the lessons of EDSA.

“We have lined up a program for the next 4 days that would be simple enough but indicative of what we intend to do. The theme for this year’s celebration is, ‘A Day of Reflection’, and that’s precisely the reason why there’s no pomp in this year’s anniversary celebration,” he said. “It is a time to settle down, to quiet a bit, and think of what has happened over the past 30 years. Do we still have that spirit of EDSA within our hearts? Have we done things that are supposed to guide us after that momentous event in our history?”

“So that’s why we want to quiet down a bit and do some reflection on this matter. But again, just to assure you, this simplicity does not mean in any way that we are giving any less significance to the 31st anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution,” he stressed.
