- La La Land mistakenly announced as Best Picture winner over Moonlight
- Wrong letter given to announcers; accounting firm responsible for mix up has apologized
- Miss Universe and Pia Wurtzbach poked fun at faux pas, said they’ve been there before
UNITED STATES – The 89th Academy Awards was treated to its own ‘Steve Harvey moment’ after announcers awarded the Oscar for Best Picture to the wrong movie.
In a scene straight out from the 2015 Miss Universe pageant, chaos ensued onstage after it was found out that presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly gave the Best Picture award to La La Land instead of Moonlight.
The director, producers and cast of the powerhouse film were in the middle of giving their speeches when the discovery was made.
La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz then assuaged the audience by showing the envelope to everyone — making it clear the winner really was Moonlight.
Host Jimmy Kimmel also tried to lighten up the incident by name-dropping fellow host Steve Harvey.
“I blame Steve Harvey for this,” he quipped.
Later on, Beatty apologized for the mix-up; saying he read Emma Stone’s name in the envelope and wasn’t even sure if it was correct.
“I wasn’t trying to be funny,” Polygon quoted him as telling the audience. “This is Moonlight, the best picture.”
PricewaterhouseCoopers, the auditing firm in charge of the Oscar ballots, said Beatty and Dunaway were given the envelope containing the winner for Best Actress which Stone won. The company apologized and said they were investigating the mix-up.
We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture,” the firm said. “The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.”
For their part, Miss Universe and former queen Pia Wurtzbach lightly ribbed the Academy Awards for the faux pas.

Eyewitness News shares with us a video via its You Tube channel, and a commenter on the vid said: “at 0:07 Warren was searching inside the envelope, he realized the card was wrong. He [got] confused and refused to announce it, and he gave it to Faye who didn’t realized the mistake.”
