For several decades, well-known actress Gloria Romero has been part of Philippine television and cinema. But just like any other human being, Romero, who’s 83 now, has also faced a lot of challenges, especially when she was just starting her showbiz career as an extra.
On YouTube, GMA Network uploaded a video of the Mars episode where Romero talked about her humble beginnings and gave advice to the ones who are just starting their career.
“Careers, minsan hindi mo gusto iyong career mo. Maghahanap ka ng iba, mas gusto mo, kailangan may pasensya ka,” the award-winning actress stressed.
[Careers, sometimes you don’t like the career path that you are taking. You will look for another, a career that you like better, so you really need to be patient.]
“Nag-umpisa ako as an extra. Tatawa-tawa lang doon [at] walang dialogue. Noong binigyan ako ng dialogue, isang linggo kong minemorize,” she shared.
[I started as an extra. All I had to do was laugh, no dialogue. When I was given a dialogue, it took me a week to memorize it.]
Romero, like other actors, also received harsh words from a director.
“Sabi ng director, ‘Sino ba ‘yang babaeng kinuha ninyo? Tanggal na, take her out! She’s destroying the whole scene,” she narrated.
[The director said, “Who’s that girl? She’s out, take her out! She’s destroying the whole scene.]
The veteran actress, whose birth name is Gloria Borrego Gallasaid, she faced the mirror inside the bathroom when she got home. There, she recited her lines and asked herself why she was not able to deliver them earlier. She was also scolded by her father.
