An 8-year-old boy suffers from confidence issues because of his rare skin disorder, but has learned to accept his appearance after meeting a dog who looks just like him.

As mentioned in the Mirror, Carter Blanchard is suffering from vitiligo, a skin disorder where white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body due to the destruction of cells that produces pigment (color) in the skin. As a result, the boy has white patches around his eyes; making him feel bad about himself.

But after meeting Rowdy, a 14-year-old Labrador with the same condition, Carter has regained confidence and learned to accept his appearance.

Carter and Rowdy first connected when Stephanie, the boy’s mother, reached out to Niki Umbenhower, the dog’s owner, after seeing Rowdy’s pictures online. The boy and the dog built a long-distance friendship and on Saturday, March 18, they met in person for the first time.

“Really, it was life-changing for him. It changed his childhood for the better, and it was a gift I couldn’t give him,” Stephanie said.

Rowdy was diagnosed with vitiligo in 2014; the same year as Carter.
