DAVAO CITY — Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang, one of the highest ranking Chinese officials expressed his support to President Rodrigo Duterte’s vision of building a railway to connect key Mindanao areas with one another.
However, as for the implementation, Wang is still unsure how to start with it. He asked to get more details of the project, like the terms of reference, other activities and the preparations for its full execution.
The Chinese help could be in the form of a loan or through the Philippine government’s public-private partnership (PPP) scheme, Wang said; speaking through an interpreter during his visit here on Saturday, March 18, 2017.
Though Wang is already committed to support the project, he still wants to be sure if this would be the most practical way to connect key Mindanao cities like Davao, Zamboanga, Butuan, Surigao, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and General Santos; thus, a feasibility study is needed to ensure how it’s going to impact the people.
Moreover, the proposed Mindanao Railway has an estimated P218 billion worth that would run at least 830 kilometers. The first phase will connect the Davao cities of Tagum in Davao del Norte, Davao City, and Digos in Davao del Sur as stated in the proposal.
The Director for Southern Mindanao of the National Economic and Development Authority, Ma. Lourdes Lim, said that Wang already assured them that the railway and other infrastructure projects will undergo further analysis and study to be conducted by his 40-man delegation and a team that he will be sending.
