- Environment Secretary lashed out at gov’t officials with self-serving interests
- She said they should resign if they cannot place public welfare over their business interests
- Confirmation hearing rescheduled for May 3
MANILA, Philippines – Prioritize the public — or resign.
Environment Secretary Gina Lopez had this to say to government officials who cannot place public welfare over their own business interests even as her confirmation hearing with the Commission on Appointments has been pushed back to May 3.
Lopez, who has earned the ire of the mining industry due to her closure orders and cancellation contracts, said officials who serve their own business interests to the detriment of the public should resign to avoid conflict.
“‘Yung tungkulin ng mga tao na doon nagtatrabaho sa pamahalaan, ‘yung unang, unang, unang, unang, unang tungkulin ay para sa tao, hindi para sa negosyo nila. Kung ‘yan ang importante – ‘yung negosyo nila – dapat mag-resign na sila,” GMA News quoted her as saying.
[The duty of those who work for the administration, the first and foremost should be towards the people, not for their businesses. If their business is more important, then they should resign.]
“All the decisions you make should be for the people because that’s why you’re elected and if you make decisions for your business interest you should not be in government service,” she added.
Lopez, however, clarified that her statement is for everyone in government — not just for those who may be opposing her confirmation as DENR chief.
“I’m not alluding to anyone. I’m saying, as a matter of principle, everyone in government must be for the people and should not make any decisions for business interest. It’s not right as a matter of principle, that’s what I’m saying,” she said.
