Laura González, the representative of Cartagena, was crowned the new Señorita Colombia a few days ago. More than just a pretty face, she also proved to be the most sensible, engaging and conversant among the pool of aspirants in this year’s Miss Colombia 2017 pageant. The Señorita Colombia chose the young lady from Cartagena to be the country’s representative to the upcoming Miss Universe 2017 pageant; rumored to be held in Australia later this year.
Andrea Tovar, Miss Universe 2016 2nd Runner-up, crowned Gonzalez after enduring different stages of the competition.
The girls donned their swimsuits and evening gowns, and for both segments, Gonzalez got the highest score. The Top 10 was revealed; this was further cut down to Top 5 and eventually the Top 3. Vanessa Monsalve from Antioquia will be representing Colombia in Miss International 2017 while Jennifer Hernandez from Santander finished as the runner-up.
Colombia is known to have the most runner-up placements in the history of the pageant. They also had a string of first runner-ups from 1992-1994 as reported by Adobo Today. Also, they have been very successful for the past three years in the Miss Universe. Paulina Vega won the competition in 2014 when Mary Jean Lastimosa represented the Philippines. In 2015, Pia Wurtzbach was crowned but Ariadna Gutierrez finished as first runner-up in one of the most controversial moments in Miss Universe history. In 2016, Maxine Medina finished just outside the Top 3 and Tovar won third place.
The pressure is on for Laura Gonzalez Ospina to take home the crown. However, she will surely face tough competition with other pageant powerhouses such as Venezuela (Keysi Sayago) and the Philippines, which is set to crown a winner on April 30, 2017 from one of these Binibining Pilipinas 2017 official candidates.
