Husband. Father. Grandfather. Whatever you may call the man of the house, he should be regarded with high respect and honor for he stands as the “pillar of the home.”
A certain old man proves to be one! He is popularly known as Kuya Willie, 65, who sells Ube to support his family.
It was last week when a netizen whose name is Quiela Catagayan bumped into Kuya Willie inside a bus on her way to her office.
Curious of the man in his mid-60’s with all his Ube Halaya packs to sell, she started to engage in a small conversation and learned about his daily routine of having to commute everyday; leaving home at 10 AM from San Pablo, Laguna to Ortigas and coming home late in the morning at 1 or 2 AM just to earn for a living by selling his homemade Ube halaya to feed and provide for his wife, three children, and five grandchildren.
Seeing them once he arrives home, casts all his weariness away, he said. He ignores his pains or tiredness as long as he sees them on a daily basis.
Inspired of Tatay Willie’s selfless act and exuding love for his family, Catagayan decided to share his story on Facebook which has gone viral throughout the social media; earning praises and sympathy for the old man. It has reached almost over 34,000 reactions on her page, and nearly 20,000 shares as of posting.
“Sobrang positive niya sa buhay na halos sumabog na ang luha ko at madurog ang puso ko habang kausap siya pero pinigilan ko dahil ayokong makita niya na naaawa ako sa kanya at ang gusto kong malaman niya ay sobrang hinangaan ko siya. Sobrang swerte ko pala. Sobrang swerte pala natin,” Catagayan wrote in her FB post.
Despite his physical condition, he still stands as the man of the house and the pillar of strength.
“ang sakit sa puso na ang dapat na nasa bahay nalang at nagpapahinga ay ganitong klase ang pinoproblema) Hanggang malakas daw siya ay gagawin niya ang lahat para sa pamilya niya, hanggang kaya niya magbenta ng ube para mabuhay gagawin niya (halos gusto ko na siya yakapin habang sinasabi niya sa akin yun),”she added.
Furthermore, Kuya Willie has been selling Ube for three years in the same spot beside Ortigas MRT station. He had been featured in 2014 on “When in Manila.”
“Let’s go guys! Its only 65 pesos, and 85 pesos (with box). I got his number for orders, you may text his wife at 09238170261. You may order in advance by texting him,” Catagayan wrote wanting to help Kuya Willie.
Truly a tale of love and sacrifice. Kudos to you Kuya Willie!
