Birthday blow-out? Mayor Erap approves pay hike for Manila City Hall employees

  • Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada has approved the salary increase for city hall employees
  • The increase will be retroactive from the beginning of this year
  • Each employee will receive 10 percent increase in their salary

MANILA, Philippines – Manila Mayor Joseph ‘Erap’ Estrada will be celebrating his 80th birthday on April 19, but it’s the employees of the Manila City Hall who gets the gift from the former president.

This after Estrada announced he has already given the green light for the salary increase of the employees of the City Hall during a flag ceremony on Monday, April 17.

“I’ve seen your hard work and dedication, so as my gift to you, you will receive another increase in your monthly pay,” said the mayor, much to the gratitude of the thousands rank-and-file workers.

According to city personnel office chief Miguelita Alonzo, the across-the-board pay hike for regular employees will be retroactive from January 1, 2017.

Each worker will receive a 10 percent increase in their salary.

Since taking over as mayor of the capital in 2013, Estrada said it has been one of his ‘birthday wishes’ “to uplift the lives of city hall employees” amid the rising costs of living in the country.

The local government of Manila has allocated P250 million for the salary adjustments of its more than 8,000 employees as mandated in the National Budget Circular No. 568 and Local Budget Circular No. 113 of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).
