A hotel employee alerted operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) after 10 suspicious-looking men who spoke in a strange language checked in around 8 a.m. on Monday, April 17.
The SWAT team that responded to the call, however, found that the “suspicious” men were actually local government officials from Basilan, a province within the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, who were in Cebu City for a conference at Sugbutel Family Hotel along S. Osmeña Street at the North Reclamation Area, as per the Inquirer.
“We just took precautionary measures to secure the area. It turned out that the group is in Cebu for a meeting,” said Senior Supt. Joel Doria, director of the Cebu City Police Office.
Doria said they started closely monitoring hotels and other establishments in the city after the armed encounter between the Abu Sayyaf Group and government forces in the province of Bohol in Central Visayas last week.
The official said hotels in Cebu City are very cooperative in reporting suspicious-looking persons and unusual events.
