- Kabayan Rep. Harry Roque has warned of clash between the Supreme Court and the Lower House over Alvarez’s possible disbarment
- Roque said this could lead to a confrontation between the two branches of government
- The lawmaker also admitted that Alvarez’s extramarital affair is an ‘open secret’ in Congress
MANILA, Philippines – Kabayan Rep. Harry Roque, a lawyer by profession, has warned of a possible crisis between the two branches of government if the disbarment case over extramarital affairs against Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez is pursued.
Alvarez has recently admitted in public to having a girlfriend despite being still legally married to his spouse. He also confessed to having fathered several children out of wedlock.
But according to Roque, while the SC has previously disbarred lawyers due to immoral conduct, disbarring Alvarez could lead to confrontation between the branches of government, and possibly, to the impeachment of several justices.
Roque said the Speaker could still muster numbers in the Lower House enough to impeach an SC justice.
“Immoral or not, the Office of the Speaker still commands numbers for impeachment,” Roque said.
Roque also admitted that Alvarez having a girlfriend is an ‘open secret’ in Congress that everyone knew about.
Roque and Alvarez are two of the Senator Leila De Lima’s staunchest critics in the Lower House.
In a Congressional inquiry last year, both lawmakers lambasted De Lima for allegedly having an affair with several men, including her married driver, Ronnie Dayan.
“‘Yung mga dumedepensa kay Senator De Lima dahil daw ‘yung parang hinarass siya, ‘yung pagkababae, ito ang tanong ko sa kanila: Bakit hindi nila kinonsider ‘yung asawa ni Ronnie Dayan? Babae ‘yun. Sa tingin ko siya ang agrabyado dito!” Alvarez was quoted as saying then.
[Those who are defending Senator De Lima because she is supposedly being harassed, this is my question to them: Why are they not taking into consideration Ronnie Dayan’s wife? She’s a woman. In my opinion, she is the aggrieved party here!]
