- Duterte praised US president, said their way of thinking is the same
- He described Trump as a “realist and pragmatic thinker”
- He said he wouldn’t have been a billionaire otherwise
MANILA, Philippines – Birds of the same feather.
Praising US President Donald Trump in front of the Filipino community in Doha, Qatar, President Rodrigo Duterte said their way of thinking is very similar.
“Trump is a realist, a pragmatic thinker,” Rappler quoted him as saying. “Akala mo lang puro, you know, pareho kami ‘yung pakunwari lang na ‘pag binastos diyan ganu’n magsalita. Pero hindi nila alam nag – ‘yung si Trump lang nag-iisip nang malalim ‘yan.”
[You just think that, you know, both of us pretend that if we’re insulted, we speak that way. But they don’t know that in the case of Trump, he thinks deeply.]
Duterte said Trump wouldn’t have become a billionaire if he was shallow-minded.
“Hindi ‘yan maging bilyonaryo [Trump wouldn’t become a billionaire if he were stupid],” he said. “Kita mo ‘yung building niya? Paano ka maging bobo?” [Have you seen his building? How can he be stupid?]
“Totoo. Si Trump, malalim ‘yan, kunwari lang. Kasi pareha ko, hindi man ako talagang bright na bright,” he said in jest. [That’s true. Trump is a deep man, he just pretends otherwise. Like me, I’m not really very bright.]
In stark contrast to Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama whom Duterte repeatedly blasted for criticizing his human rights record and anti-drug drive, ties between Duterte and the current US leader have been warm especially after the latter praised him for his war on drugs in a telephone call.
“Look at his inaugural speech. He will stop drugs. G**o din [He’s an idiot too]! We’re not different. He will really kill you,” Duterte said.
