Waitress receives $400 tip from generous couple…plus $10,000 offer to pay for her college debt

For Hawaiian waitress Cayla Chandara, receiving tips from customer is nothing out of the ordinary. However, receiving 200% percent of the diner’s bill as tip is quite rare. Moreso is an offer of $10,000 to pay for her student loan.

But this is what a generous Australian couple did, and Cayla is simply amazed by the unexpected windfall!

Cayla is a waitress working for a Thai cuisine at night and at a Cheesecake factory during the day in Waikiki. Then she met this kind Australian couple with whom she strikes a conversation; talking about her life – how she’s been struggling to make both ends meet – and her dreams to pursue her studies.

“I told them I moved here for school, but I was kind of in a little bit of debt and I couldn’t go back to school, because I couldn’t afford it,” she told KHON.

The couple left after paying their $200 bill. To Cayla’s surprise, they left her with a $400 tip, which is double the amount of the bill.

“I never get tipped that big. I had to say thank you,” she said.

Remembering where the couple stayed, she went to their hotel the next day with a  thank-you card, a dessert, and flowers to show her gratitude.

Cayla said that would be the last time she get to meet the couple, who chose to remain anonymous. She was wrong.

The next day, they went back to the diner with a more generous offer to Cayla – $10,000 to pay for her studies.

Cayla said she initially refused, but eventually accepted the offer. When she asked then how she could possibly pay them back, the couple replied in a text message: “Be your best possible self dream big and strive for your goals.”

She now plans to take up liberal arts and business; many thanks to her generous friends.

“I want to make them proud. I will take this opportunity with an open heart,” she said.
