Binibining Pilipinas 2017 has already concluded and Rachel Peters ultimately took home the Miss Universe – Philippines 2017 crown. Aside from Peters, Maria Angelica De Leon, Katarina Rodriguez and Charmaine Elima, who all took home crowns at the end of the event held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, April 30th, one Binibini was a clear standout from the beginning of the competition – Sirene Sutton.
A lot of pageant experts believe that the Angelina Jolie deadringer has what it takes to become Philippines’ next representative to the Miss Universe pageant but despite her excellent performance in Swimsuit and superb Evening Gown presentation, Sirene Sutton failed miserably when she was asked a very tough question at the Q&A portion.
Asked by Mitzy Borromeo, her question was: “Is it right for parents demand support from children in exchange for raising them?” Visibly stunned with her question, she immediately said “No”, but she asked to repeat the question to allow her more time to think. Pressured with the jeers from the crowd, she answered “Yes”, but took it back moments after and said “No” again. It was not too long before she ran out of time and missed her chance to answer the question.
In a GMA Report, hosts Xian Lim and Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach then called on the next candidate to answer the next question; handling the situation well. Later on, Wurtzbach told the audience that the candidates are going through a lot of pressure and what they are doing is not simple.
Truly, the Q&A portion is a hit or miss portion in the yearly contest. Perceived front-runners and favorites can make or break their chance because of it. The video of her fumble made rounds online and became viral thereafter.
In an ABS-CBN story after the pageant, Sutton was asked about what happened, and she admitted: “Yes, I was so nervous I didn’t understand the question. I didn’t understand it properly, maybe it was my nerves and the pressure.”
While it was clearly a blunder that erased her chance to claim a crown, it is already an honor to make it to the Top 15. As a parting note, she said: “I just want to thank everyone who supported me. My friends, family and supporters. Probably, it wasn’t my night, but who knows?”
Sutton was then asked if she will join the competition again, Sutton briefly said: “We’ll see.”
Truly, this round can make or break the chances of a front-runner or favorite in the competition. Watch Sirene Sutton’s full Q&A here:
