Top bar passer shares secret to passing exams: Pray for it as early as starting law school

  • Bar topnotcher ecstatic over passing grueling exams, said topping it beyond her expectations
  • She said she constantly prayed to pass the bar exams even when she only started law school
  • She has not yet decided on future plans, will take a pilgrimage for now

MANILA, Philippines – For Karen Mae Calam, this was an unexpected blessing from above.

A graduate of Cebu’s University of San Carlos, Calam — who admitted she never expected to be the bar topnotcher — attributed her first-place finish in the November 2016 bar exams to the power of prayer.

“When you take the exam, you just go there and give it your best shot. I really didn’t expect na top one talaga [to be top one] although you pray for it from God. You pray for it as early as when you start law school,” she told ABS-CBN.

“I didn’t expect that God will give that very good and merciful and amazing, but He gave talaga [really] that top one. That’s beyond, beyond, beyond what I prayed for from Him,” she added.

Calam, who is also a CPA, admitted she’s still processing everything in.

“I don’t have plans yet. So far I love doing my job so no particular plan yet. Currently I’m in private practice. I don’t know, I’m still processing all the information. I’m still processing it,” she said; adding that her immediate plan is to go on a pilgrimage to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño to offer her thanks.

“I really want to go to Sto. Niño, to the Basilica here in Cebu, because He is one of my patrons for the Bar exams. So I just want to go there first to pray and just offer all prayer and thanks to Him, and probably Visita Iglesia, too, to give thanks, just to make sure that I don’t forget to give thanks to the Lord who gave this all to me,” she bared.
