- 16-year-old girl was beaten by parents after she refused an arranged marriage
- Maarib Al Hishmawi ran away from home in January 30 and was later found in mid-March
Parents of a 16-year-old girl from Texas were arrested Friday after allegedly beating, choking and pouring hot cooking oil on their daughter’s body after she refused an arranged marriage.
According to reports, Abdulah Fahmi Al Hishmawi, 34, and Hamdiyah Saha Al Hishmawi, 33, were accused of physically abusing their daughter, Maarib Al Hishmawi. They also attempted to force her into an arranged marriage with an older man.
Police believe that Maarib’s parents were to receive $20,000 from a sick individual looking to score a young bride.
“This young lady, at various times over that time period was subjected to some pretty bad abuse because she didn’t want to be married to this person,” Bexar County Sheriff Jamier Salazar said, according to KSAT 12.
The teenager ran away and was reported missing on Jan. 30 after she was last seen leaving Taft High School, where she was a student. Salazar said they found her in mid-March; adding that she was taken in by an organization after she ran away and was safe.
Abdulah Al Hishmawi and his wife are charged with continuous violence against a family member. They were released on bonds totaling $60,000.
The girl’s father Abdulah denied the allegations; claiming that nobody abused his daughter, NBC 4 reported.
