The Philippines’ Azkals made history Tuesday night by qualifying for 2019 AFC Asian CUP for the first time after defeating Tajikistan, 2-1, at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Phil Younghusband, who was the face of the Azkals for the past 13 years, netted the 50th goal of his international career in the 90th minute to help the Philippine team book a ticket to the Asian Cup; the first time in the country’s history wherein it will be making an appearance in the grandest football stage of Asia.
“I just want to say one thing, this is the best team that we had, this is the best camp that we had in four years. Everything is positive,” said Azkals coach Thomas Dooley via SPIN.
With the win, the Azkals finish on the top of Group with 12 points off, 3 Wins and 3 draws.
The Azkals celebrated with the nearly 4,600 fans in attendance. The first place finish gives the Azkals their first trip to the AFC Asian Cup, which kicks off on January 5, 2019 in the United Arab Emirates.
