- Ashley Despain has been allegedly trying to smuggle drugs to an inmate at a southwest Missouri jail by using a Bible
- She was charged with delivery or possession of a controlled substance in a jail
A woman from Missouri is facing charges after she allegedly tried to smuggle drugs into a county jail using a Bible.
Ashley Despain, of Nevada, Missouri, was charged this week with delivery or possession of a controlled substance in a jail, according to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office. No attorney is listed for Despain in online court records and bond is set at $5,000.
“Usually (a Bible) is something you bring to help somebody through situations,” Sheriff Jason Mosher told The Star on Wednesday. “That’s probably the wrong kind of help — putting drugs in it.”
Typically, Vernon County Jail only allows Bibles and other literature to be given to inmates from the outside, but Mosher noted jailers at the facility will now be on the lookout for that sort of act more diligently.
