- Defense secretary Delfin Lorenzana asked the communist leaders to prove that they can control their fighters
- President Duterte already agreed to resume peace talks
- During the peace process last year, Lorenza revealed it was used by NPA to recruit members
Defense secretary Delfin Lorenzana urged the communist leaders to prove that they still have authority over their fighters before a ceasefire is made. This came after President Rodrigo Duterte agreed to resume peace talks with the Reds.
Lorenzana was quoted by Manila Bulletin saying, “They have to prove na kaya nilang rendahan ‘yung mga tao nila sa baba, Kasi kung magkaroon tayo ng ceasefire, bilateral, kailangan assured tayo na kayang kaya nilang kontrolin iyung mga tao, otherwise huwag na lang.”
[They have to prove that they can control their fighters on the ground because if we agree to have a ceasefire, bilateral, we need to be assured that they still have control; otherwise, no more.]
The Defense secretary reiterated that they want to an assurance to secure their troops. He said, “What we want is bilateral (ceasefire) so that there will be mechanism to check who is violating what. We don’t have any problem in controlling our troops, even the police because we have this chain of command.”
Last year, Lorenzana revealed that the peace process was used by the NPA to recruit more members.
