The music icon Mariah Carey has revealed that she has been battling bipolar II disorder in 2001 and suffered for the past 17 years.
She said during her interview with People magazine that it began when she was hospitalized for a physical and mental breakdown.
The singer first thought that it was just a ‘severe sleeping disorder’ and she didn’t want to believe her diagnosis.
“I was working and working and working… I was irritable and in constant fear of letting people down… Eventually, I would just hit a wall,” she said.
“I guess my depressive episodes were characterized by having very low energy. I would feel so lonely and sad—even guilty that I wasn’t doing what I needed to do for my career,” Mariah added.
Though Mariah lived her life in ‘denial and isolation’, she finally decided to seek help. She’s now undergoing therapy and medication.
The singer also said that she’s still overwhelmed by the support she’s receiving from fans after opening up.
On her Instagram post she took it as an inspiration to continue her journey.
