Senator Grace Poe lauded the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for fulfilling its promise to increase the number of running Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) trains.
From the usual 7 to 12 running train, the DOTr deployed 15 trains on Monday, April 2, after conducting extensive maintenance work during a five-day Holy Week break. The number of trains was decreased to 13 the following day after minor troubleshooting and replacement of spare parts were done.
According to PTV News, the lady senator lauded the transportation department for the increase in number of running MRT-3 trains.
“We commend the Department of Transportation for the maintenance and repair works on the MRT that gave us 13 running trains to date,” the senator said in a statement.
Sen. Poe, the chair of the Senate Committee on Public Services, said she is hoping that the DOTr could fulfill its promise to increase the number of MRT-3 running trains to 20.
“We hope this will be the start of the promised resurrection of MRT’s services and the reversal of its abysmal record of unfortunate events. We also hope this would alleviate the sufferings of the commuters who brave the long queues every day to get a ride, and often get off-loaded when the train encounters technical glitches. We look forward to the DOTr’s promise to increase the running trains to 20, each having four-car configuration to transport more passengers at a faster pace,” Poe said.
The senator acknowledged that the railway system of the country has a long way to go to be at par with those of developed countries.
“We know we have a long way to go before we can have a train system at par with developed countries. But 13 and soon, 20 trains are better than seven or eight. We will keep watch until we have a train system that is affordable, efficient, safe and comfortable, because the public deserves no less,” Poe said.
In the past weeks, the MRT-3 had only 7 up to a maximum of 12 running trains.
