Calida faces graft, ‘extra-marital affairs’ complaint before Ombudsman

  • SolGen Calida is facing charges of graft for not divesting his shares in the family business
  • He is also accused of having an illicit relationship with a 22-year-old assistant
  • The complaint was filed before the Ombudsman by a private citizen

MANILA, Philippines – Solicitor General Jose Calida is facing charges of graft and for allegedly having an ‘extra-marital affair’ before the Office of the Ombudsman.

The complaint was filed on Thursday by private citizen Jocelyn Marie Acosta who earlier urged the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) to file a similar quo warranto petition against Supreme Court Associate Justice Teresita De Castro.

In the complaint, Acosta accused Calida of failing to divest his shares from the company owned by the family – the Vigilant and Investigative Security Agency – which supposedly managed to secure contracts with government agencies like the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA, National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) and the National Parks Development Corporation (NPDC).

Acosta, a supporter of embattled Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, also accused the Solicitor General of giving up the government claims to the alleged Marcos ill-gotten wealth.

Extra-marital affair

Another complaint accused Calida of having an extra-marital affair with a 22-year-old executive assistant who allegedly received P1.8-M from the government.

However, Acosta admitted she does not have solid evidence of such illicit relationship but wans the Ombudsman to investigate the issue.

“I acknowledge we do not have hard evidence when it comes to the relationship. But the eyewitness reports are strong, very credible ang witnesses. We beseech the Ombudsman to investigate this relationship,” said Acosta.

Calida spearheaded the filing of quo warranto petition against Sereno. On Friday, May 11, the Supreme Court en banc is expected to hand its decision which is widely perceived to be in favor of the OSG petition.
