A man from China was detained for 15 days and fined $11,000 after he opened the emergency exit door of an airplane that had landed at China’s Mianyang Nanjiao Airport.
The 25-year-old man who was only identified by his surname Chen, according to a report by SCMP, claimed he had “waited in the aisle for 10 minutes as passengers left the plane” and that the cabin was “too stuffy and too hot” so he lifted the latch of the plane’s emergency exit to get some fresh air; causing the door to fall and accidentally activated the evacuation slide.
“I just pushed down on the window handle beside me,” he reportedly told investigators. “When the door fell out, I panicked.”
The crew alerted police and he was detained for 15 days for the unauthorized removal of aviation facilities. He will also be fined 70,000 yuan (USD 11,000) to cover the airline’s costs.
The unidentified airline company pledged its complete support in the security agencies’ investigation.
