- Cole Sprouse shared several photos of Manila during his trip
- Some netizens called him out for the ‘unflattering’ photos of Manila
- He removed one photo after his caption was criticized for being insensitive
Far from the glitzy limelight he was in during his recent visit in Manila, Hollywood star Cole Sprouse took snapshots of Manila life.
However, one photo became a center of a bit of controversy. The photo showed a bunch of kids all looking at him with a background of their shanties. Sprouse captioned it, “Well i’m not your parent, don’t gotta follow me around.”
He removed the photo after it drew some flak.
One netizen’s comment was quoted by Teen Vogue saying, “You shouldn’t post a photo of some innocent kid with her poor impoverished living conditions in the back and make a joke. A rich white privileged man going into a place he really doesn’t belong taking pictures and putting a caption like that…”
Sprouse apologized for the photo and said, “For those of you that took offense to this photo or the caption, I removed it. My apologies, and not my intention. Certainly not seeking to sensationalize poverty nor poke fun, should have thought more about the words used, and the implications of those words I hadn’t even considered.”
The Riverdale star continued to post photos of Manila streets. He shared a photo of shantytowns with broken houses. He also showed a man lying amidst sacks, looking tired. He had a photo of a popular motel and an old tricycle.
Some Filipinos took offense for the ‘unflattering’ photos and suggested Sprouse should have also showed the 5-star hotel he stayed in. Some also just justified that the photos reveal the real Manila life.
