- The Comelec has announced disqualification of barangay or SK candidates who will overspend
- Spokesperson James Jimenez said that candidates can only spend P5 for every registered voter in their area
- They will also regulate boosted or promoted posts on social media starting 2019 mid-term elections
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) released a statement on Friday about disqualification of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan candidates who overspend.
According to ABS-CBN News, Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez reportedly said that spending limits cover campaign materials, including broadcast air time. Each candidate is only allowed to spend P5 for every registered voter in their area.
He also said that the Comelec is aware of such, due to reports about candidates buying air time on radio and television for their jingles.
They are also observing “rich content” in their videos.
“Example, a video with good production value, if you get someone to sing for your campaign, an established artist for instance sings for your campaign, then these are things of value and that is where the cost implication will arise,” Jimenez said.
The Comelec will also regulate boosted or promoted posts on social media starting 2019 mid-term elections.
The campaign period for the barangay and SK polls is until May 12 and the elections will be on May 14.
