The House Committee on Revision of Laws approved a bill that declares every last Monday of January as a special working holiday in celebration of the “National Bible Day.”
The House Bill 7135 is authored by Senator Manny Pacquiao’s brother, Sarangani Representative Rogelio Pacquiao.
The lawmaker believes the bill will push for the “development of moral character and spiritual foundation of Filipinos.”
Pacquiao reiterated the importance of celebrating the “The Living Truth.” His note was quoted by GMA stating, “This [bill] calls for all Christians throughout the archipelago to unite and celebrate the Bible as the cradle of faith.”
Pacquiao described the Bible as an important tool in transforming the lives of people. “It serves as the foundation of spiritual, moral and social fiber, molding a socially responsible citizenry and a strong nation,” he added.
The lawmaker also cited the 2015 data of the National Statistics Authority stating that 90% of Filipinos are Christians. According to him, this makes the Philippines the largest Christian nation in the Asia-Pacific region and fifth largest in the world.
