- Spokesman Harry Roque said that it was a confirmation that the Filipinos appreciate Duterte’s strong leadership
- He added that Filipinos have learned not to take the President’s “colorful language” seriously
Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque took the TIME Magazine’s feature on President Rodrigo Duterte positively.
Roque was quoted by ABS-CBN saying, “Regardless of slant, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has demonstrated strong and decisive leadership – a quality appreciated by Filipinos as evidenced by the Chief Executive’s high satisfaction, approval, trust and performance ratings.”
Duterte graced the cover of TIME’s international issue along with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
In the cover story entitled “The ‘Strongmen Era’ Is Here. Here’s What It Means for You” written by Ian Bremmer, Duterte was described as a “former mayor who talked more like a mob boss than a President.”
To this, Roque said, “Filipinos have learned not to take PRRD (Duterte) literally with his colorful language, but they have surely taken seriously the issues the President has espoused.”
Roque also reiterated that Duterte’s brand of justice “strictly adheres to the rule of law.”
