- Several senators reacted on Duterte’s statement that China made an assurance he will not be ousted
- Three senators expressed their concern over the statement
- They said that Filipinos should be responsible for the Philippines and not China
Several senators reacted on the recent statement from President Rodrigo Duterte saying that China will not allow his ouster.
Senator Panfilo Lacson released a statement reiterating that the Filipinos must decide for the country and not China.
He was quoted by ABS-CBN stating, “If he really said that, and in the context that we are made to understand, all I can say is, God help the Philippines! We are a democratic and sovereign country. Nobody, not any foreign country but the Philippines and the Filipinos can determine and decide what is best for us.”
Senator Kiko Pangilinan also echoed Lacson’s concerns; stressing the sovereignty of the country. He also questioned the intent and interest of China. He said, “Ang pahayag bang ito ang kapalit ng pananahimik ng administrasyon sa West Philippine Sea? Is this the reason why we are willing to enter into loans with China even if the interest rates are 4 to 5 times higher than that of Japan or South Korea?” [Is this in exchange for the administration’s silence on West Philippine Sea?]
Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, a known critic of the administration also spoke up and said that he doesn’t believe China made those statements. He said, “Duterte’s statement betrays his paranoia about the state of affairs in his own country. No one is trying to kick him out; he is doing the destabilizing all by himself.”
This came after Duterte shared China’s “assurance” that he will not be ousted. He said, “The assurances of [President] Xi Jinping were very encouraging… ‘We will not allow you to be taken out from your office, and we will not allow the Philippines to go to the dogs.”
