A stray cat was believed to have been trapped underground in a 50-meter-long cable tunnel in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province for 5 years.

According to Asia One’s story, a yellowish, small and thin cat was probably trapped when construction workers sealed the tunnel. To be able to survive, concerned locals have dropped food scraps through narrow gaps between the heavy concrete slabs since then.

They would say ‘meow’ and the cat would come to the gap and wait for food. Some even tried to open up the slab but couldn’t without the proper tools.

Fire fighters made a hole for the cat to at least fit in and finally escape after receiving a call for help.

“We cut and pried open several slabs, but we didn’t see the cat,” Ji Minghao from the city’s fire department.

Perhaps the animal slipped out when no one was looking?
